Bonus: My Mid-Life Quest to Be the Durham Bulls Mascot
Notes on a side of me you may not know.
*I publish From the Ethics Desk newsletters every other Wednesday at noon. Here’s a Friday bonus post that’s a little different from my usual musings. Enjoy! -Adam
Two weeks ago I applied to be the Durham Bulls mascot, Wool E. Bull. Actually, I applied to be his backup.
If you didn’t know already, I was a college mascot more than twenty years ago. The Duke Blue Devil, to be precise. (Duke recently released “The Details of the Devil,” a short documentary about the history of the Blue Devil, and a few of my stories were included.) Being the Blue Devil was a blast.
So when a friend told me recently that the Durham Bulls were looking for a new Wool E., my wheels started turning. There’s no way I’m working late into the evening for 75+ home baseball games per year, but before I knew it I had a cover letter, resume, and an account at Team Work Online. And it turns out that the Bulls are reviving a part-time sidekick character, The Blue Monster, that hasn’t been seen in years.
I’m very available part-time.
Anyway, I had so much fun putting the application together, I decided to share it. Hope it makes you smile. (And if you’re wondering about that curious last paragraph - each line is a response to a minimum requirement from the job description.)
Wool E. Can really handle that go cart. I look forward to seeing you do the same.
Showing this to Mike as soon as he hops off his work call!
